Walking and cycling

Are you a fan of walking and cycling? Ask at reception for a free walking and/or cycling map. There is also a map of Nieuwvliet available, which includes the “Nieuwvliet walk”.

Beach walk

Of course, a long walk on the beach is an essential part of your holiday. It is fantastic all year round, summer and winter.

If you turn left on the beach, you will walk towards Cadzand. Turn right towards Groede - Breskens. Tired of walking? Feel free to take a break at one of the high-quality beach pavilions.

Walking in nature reserves

There are several nature reserves in Zeeuws Vlaanderen where you can enjoy a lovely walk.

The Zwin between Retranchement and Knokke is world-famous, of course, and a must-see if you want to spot storks. It is best to park at the visitor centre in Knokke-Heist. There are several walks you can take from here, the longest being 13 km.

Waterdunen is a newly created nature reserve on the coast between Groede and Breskens. You are not allowed to cycle through it, but you can walk through it. Dogs are also not allowed, so keep that in mind. The area is definitely worth a visit, especially if you love seabirds.

The old city walls around Sluis are also wonderful to walk along. This walk of about 5 km reveals a beautiful piece of history. The rare tree frog is common here, so keep your ears open in the spring. That's when you can hear it frequently.

Benches in Bresjes

Tip: a unique 6 km walk through the fishing village of Breskens. Along th e coast, you will find 17 different benches with a QR code. Scan the code on the bench and listen to an impressive story about Breskens. This could be about fishing, nature or the bombing during the Second World War. An interesting thing to do!

Cycling

There are plenty of cycling opportunities around Nieuwvliet. Where should we start?

Cycling along the dyke is always wonderful. Almost the entire dyke offers views of the sea, whether you cycle from Nieuwvliet towards Cadzand or in the other direction towards Groede Breskens.

The area between Cadzand and Sluis is also recommended for a beautiful cycling trip. Gnarled pollard willows along centuries-old narrow dykes embellish the view.

You can also take the ferry (with or without your bicycle) from Breskens to Vlissingen. Crossing the Westerschelde on the ferry is a particularly enjoyable experience for children. And there is plenty to do and see in Vlissingen and the beautiful neighbouring town of Middelburg.

International possibilities

The area between Cadzand and Sluis is also recommended for a beautiful cycle ride. Gnarled pollard willows along centuries-old narrow dykes embellish the view.

And, of course, Zeeuws Vlaanderen offers international opportunities when it comes to cycling. Knokke is about 16 to 17 km away and is therefore easily accessible.

Many cyclists depart from Sluis (9 km) towards the charming town of Damme in Belgium. From Sluis, it is about 15 km. You cycle along the Damse Vaart canal, which is beautiful. See photo on the right.

Not prone to sore bottoms? Even Bruges is doable on an electric bicycle (about 35 km one way).

Pancake route

Want to go on a nice bike ride with the kids? Then the pancake route is just the thing for you! This route runs past the campsite and is about 6 km long. Along the way, you collect the ingredients for pancakes and then bake them with the kids back at the campsite.
